I was there when Mr. Steven Ostrowski came to our Newman Council meeting to propose creating an ASUCD "Christian Slate" to counter the other political parties on the UCD campus and unify the Christian groups. I never submitted any endorsement or opposition to the cause. When the Christian Slate garnered a significant membership support base, I congratulated Mr. Ostrowski on his success and God willing, wished him well on his endeavors. At the time, I was the Social Justice Coordinator for the Newman Catholic Student Community at UCDavis and felt that it would be inappropriate to endorse affiliation to this political group. I wrote disclaimers, "The UCD Newman Catholic Student Community is not affiliated with nor does it endorse the Christian Slate." I asked Mr. Ostrowski to remove my name from the Christian Slate board of officers and he did so swiftly and accordingly. When however, I removed all mentions of endorsement by Newman and/or the Catholic Church, I was dismissed by the party and stripped of my membership altogether. I welcomed this decision on their part with no mal feelings. While I am sure that the Lord may possibly use the Christian Democratic Party (as it is now known) to further His Will, I doubt that some people within the party administration are listening. However, I am in no position to judge. I have been following up on the controversies surrounding the slate and it is being attacked as much as it is attacking. Yes, LEAD, Ignite, & Student Focus are political factions that fail to meet the needs of their constitutents, and I would even include the Christian Democratic Party in that list. UCD Campus politics is almost hopeless. There are big problems and little solutions. I hope the CDP would PRAY for the future of ASUCD as I believe that is the best solution they can provide for the campus community. I have received an invitation this morning to join the Christian Democratic Party, which I intend to decline. I bid the party blessings however. May it open both eyes and both arms to the needs of a student body that has grown so apathetic to politics, so disconcerted with religion, and so lacking in confidence. So help us God.
